Home is most certainly where the heart is and this is especially true of Bolster Community, a local charity who are approaching 20 years supporting the community this year. To mark the anniversary, their Social Enterprise ‘Acorn’ is launching something extra special, a new range of Acorn candles affectionally called ‘Scents of Home’ inspired by Ireland’s newest Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark.
To celebrate, they held a launch celebration in The Whistledown Hotel on Thursday 1st August, with guests including the Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Cllr David Lee-Surginor and Tracey Mooney, Product Development and Trade Engagement Officer (Enterprise, Regeneration and Tourism Department NMD District Council).
Every candle purchase counts
Like the rest of the Acorn range, their new candles have been lovingly crafted by their incredible Bolster Buddies and support staff. And this is what makes Acorn so special and unique – it not only gives meaningful opportunities for their young adults of mixed ability, it also helps them establish and work towards personal goals – developing friendships, new community connections and skills along the way. The profits albeit modest in scale, also go back into supporting Bolster Community’s vital work in the community.
Jacinta Linden, CEO of Bolster Community, reflects…
"I am immensely proud to introduce the 'Scents of Home' range. These candles are not only a special tribute to Bolster Community’s home with beautiful artwork depicting The Mournes, Slieve Gullion, Carlingford Peninsula and Strangford Lough, they also beautifully embody our mission of spreading inclusivity, opportunity and wellbeing, and we hope they will inspire our community, both at home and overseas, to support us and our work.”
The Scents of Home collection
The new range features four unique scents, each inspired by the beautiful natural landscapes that surround us here in Newry, Mourne & Down - and together also makes a fine tribute to the ‘Mourne Gullion Strangford UNESCO Global Geopark’.
Deputy Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Cllr David Lee-Surginor stated “The Bolster Community's creation of candles inspired by the Mourne Gullion Strangford Geopark reflects a deep connection to the unique natural and cultural heritage of the region. The geopark, renowned for its stunning landscapes, geological features, and rich biodiversity, which aim to capture and convey the essence of the area. He continued “ I am delighted to see this range of candles launched as the initiative aligns with the community's broader goals of supporting sustainability and local craftsmanship, while also offering a tangible, sensory experience that brings the magic of Mourne Gullion Strangford into people's homes”.
The four new ‘Scents of Home’ candles include ‘Mourne Echoes’, ‘Gullion Breeze’, ‘‘Strangford Sails’ – and the additional scent has been created called Carlingford Whispers’ with each candle in the collection featuring exclusive artwork from the very talented Majukooo, a young artist from Kilkeel.
Bolster Community hope that the ‘Scents of Home’ collection will not only connect with supporters locally but that they’ll also find a home with the diaspora who have made new homes all over the world.
